This session of the course introduces the present linguistic situation in Taiwan. The introduction includes the geographical distribution and population of the languages spoken on the island, linguistic features of the major languages used, and language change and variation over the past 60 years. Special attention will be paid to the Formosan languages that are spoken by the aborigines and are playing a very important role in the most widely distributed language family, Austronesian, in the world. Field work research results or linguistic data will be provided to explain language phenomena.
