Brief course description
In this course, we will study a series of major plays of Shakespeare that cover the dramatic genres of the Shakespearean corpus. We will begin our course with the study of romance in The Tempest, move on to a further probing of love, family, identity, and power in a problem play, The Merchant of Venice, to As You Like It, a major comedy, and then on to the tragedies, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, and Macbeth. The course ends with a discussion of major history plays that represent Shakespeare’s own interpretation of English history: Richard II, 1 Henry IV, and Henry V. The approach we take to the study of Shakespeare in this course emphasizes literary form aPolicy on required academic work for this course nd historical contexts. Reading and analyzing these plays in terms of generic development and the playwright’s engagement with the events and major issues and debates of his time, we will examine these plays in terms of their connection to contemporary situations and historical developments. The way power relations and the social order are enacted on Shakespeare’s stage expresses his vision of the dynamic between theater and reality. Our discussion of the plays will focus on Shakespeare’s conceptualization of historical condition and the socio-political dynamic of lived reality. We will investigate the playwright’s engagement with politics and culture in the world of drama, and practice Shakespearean criticism with an awareness of the playwright’s modernity and relevance to recent history, from his concerns with the nature of colonial power, identity and the other, gender relations, to authority and legitimacy.

In order to pass the course, you must fulfill all of the above requirements. If you omit any of the above, you will automatically fail the course. No make-up is available for any of the above in this course. 

N.B. Even though your instructor has taught this course before, the material for the course is updated and may not reflect the material for the same course from previous years. Your instructor does not consult the testing material from previous years when she makes up the tests for this course. While the format for the tests in this course may resemble the format of tests from past years and other courses, the questions and material for the tests this semester are made up entirely afresh. 沒有考古題。

Use of generative AI to prepare specific Discussion Forum postings and papers is permitted and required. For all other assignments, the use of AI to prepare and complete coursework submitted for credit and/or evaluation, including the final exam, is not permitted and will likely result in a failing grade or an outright “0” for the exam or assignment. Suspected AI use where it is prohibited will be penalized in grade.
