An Introduction to Postwar Fiction:

The focus of this course is to read a lot of English translations of post-war Taiwanese novels, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the urban experience reflected in Taiwanese novels from 1949 to the end of the 20th century. The cities related to Taiwanese novels are naturally dominated by Taipei, but they also include other cities, such as Peking in Lin Haiyin, New York and Chicago in Bai Xianyong, Kyoto in Zhu Tianxin, and Kaohsiung written by Yang Qinghui. This course is divided into two parts. After a week of introduction, the first set of designated reading assignments was categorized by writers of different periods: Lin Haiyin ("Southern City Story") of "Nostalgic Writing in the 1950s", and Bai Xianyong ("Sin" in Modernism in the 60s) "Zi" and short stories about other cities) and Wang Wenxing ("Zi Zi"), "Local Realism in the 1970s"

本課程之重點在大量閱讀戰後臺灣小說之英文譯本，期能藉此深入了解從一九四九年以後到二十世紀末的臺灣小說中所反映出之都市經驗。與臺灣小說有關之都市自然以臺北為主，但同時也包括了其他都市，例如林海音的北平、白先勇的紐約與芝加哥，朱天心的京都，以及楊青矗筆下的高雄。此一課程分成兩個部分。在一週的導論過後，第一組指定閱讀作業以各個不同時期作家分類：包括「五零年代懷鄉書寫」的林海音（《城南舊事》）、「六零年代現代主義」的白先勇（《孽子》與關於其他城市的短篇小說）與王文興（《孽子》）、「七零年代鄉土寫實主義」
